Automated labelling specialist Industrial Labelling Systems (ILS) is expanding into Scotland, with the appointment of a new regional sales manager covering the country.

Jonathan Carmichael joins the company from the Bruichladdich Distillery on the Isle of Islay, where he spent 24 years working in bottling and production, including 15 years as Bottling Operations Manager. He brings a wealth of hands-on experience to the role, as well as extensive knowledge of packaging and labelling requirements in the food and drinks industry.

At ILS, he will take responsibility for growing the business across Scotland, with a particular focus on the food and beverage sector. Valued at approximately £15 billion, it is the country’s largest industry and has seen exports more than double in the last 10 years.

Denis Brett, Managing Director at ILS, said, “Expanding into Scotland is a natural next step for us, and we couldn’t be happier to have Jonathan join the team. His background gives us invaluable insights into what food and drink manufacturers need and puts us in an excellent position to grow our offer in line with those requirements.”

Businesses are increasingly investing in advanced technologies and automation to streamline operations and reduce human error. The print and apply labelling equipment market is expected to see an annual growth rate of 10.65% in the period to 2032, with industries such as food and beverage key adopters due to the need for precise labelling for compliance, branding, and traceability.

Jonathan added, “I’m excited to be starting the role and to have the opportunity to help put ILS on the map in Scotland. There’s a real need for an equipment provider that can offer not just superior reliability and performance but also excellent after-sales service, especially because many manufacturers are in rural, inaccessible locations – and this is something I know from experience that ILS can deliver.”

There are also plans to expand the ILS offer further through a partnership with automation experts PALpack. The agreement will see the two companies working together on projects to deliver end-to-end automation, from case packing and sack filling through to palletising and print and apply labelling.

PALpack Managing Director, Dave Wood, said, “There is a natural synergy between our two companies, which makes working together a logical step. With more and more companies seeing the advantages of automation, being able to offer solutions that improve efficiency along the whole production line benefits everyone.”

The firms will be sharing a stand at PPMA Total 2025 in September, showcasing the FlexWipe automated pallet labelling solution from ILS and a number of PALpack’s options for more efficient palletising and depalletising.
